Dear GYLI Intern Applicants,

Thank you for being an exceptional leader and for your commitment to change the lives of young people. We are very excited about working on the GYLI journey with you in our summer institutes for 2008.

As an intern on the GYLI team you have a crucial part to play. Not only are we relying on you to help us supervise safety in all aspects of our programs, but also to sit in on student and faculty circles, and make sure we are staying true to the GYLI vision.

As you know, GYLI institutes are physically, emotionally, and intellectually challenging experiences. Interns help to open a “safe space” that encourages students and adults to be open and reflective, which provides the best transfer of the experience back to schools and communities. You need to BE the leadership that the program embodies, not just wait for faculty to tell you what to do. Faculty sponsors are challenged to observe their own level of appropriate involvement in institute activities, coordinators are focused on the logistics and smooth transitions between elements, which leaves interns to be “relationship managers”—checking in with students and faculty—make sure all voices are being heard, offering help and support where it is needed, and guiding students as well as stepping back to let their discoveries occur from within.

We want to take care to equip you for your GYLI journey in the best way possible. There will be a intern conference call in May of 2008 where all new GYLI interns will have a chance to gain crucial understanding of the GYLI mission, vision, and specific practices.

Please make sure you complete all the information on the website, and thanks again for your interest in the GYLI mission.

Sincerely,

Matt Nink
