Year 3 – Day 5!

Today we got a first-hand look at peri-urban farming. Hillary and Jean-Claude, our Rwandan guides, explained various ways of cultivating crops in the absence of soil. Students were eager to eat everything they saw growing, including cilantro, lettuce, cacao, and mamonchinos.

We also explored an organic farm on campus. In keeping with the ethos of sustainable agriculture, every system present on the farm supports the other.  Here we saw the cocoa plant from seed to finished product, as we tried chocolates produced by Earth University students.

After lunch, it was off to the homestays! After spending the first five days of the program together, it was time to split off into groups to spend four nights with Costa Rican families. We headed off campus into the La Argentina community in the afternoon to start our homestay adventure, getting close to the action on real farms.
